why simplicity?
Take a moment to consider the various challenges we are facing
in this culture: escalating consumer debt partnered with overwork,
overstress, and overconsumption;  increased incidence of
lifestyle-related physical illness; growing numbers of people who
despite higher wages and more "stuff" still feel unhappy and
dissatisfied; limited time for family, friends, recreation, community
involvement, and the activities we really love; unprecedented
environmental issues compounded by disconnection from the
natural world and unrestrained resource use (a.k.a. shopping,
driving, building, etc.)

The solutions to these issues are complex and draw on the
wisdom of many different sectors, but a common theme that
informs them all, and that can help improve our well-being and
create a better world, is the practice of simplicity.  Simplicity is not
so much a tangible thing to be held or acquired as it is a set of
values that guide our actions.  The philosophy of simplicity has as
its outcome many of the goals we as individuals, and as a global
collective, ultimately seek.

By working less, slowing down and exploring frugality we can
have the money we need to achieve freedom from the anxiety and
drudgery that often surrounds money and jobs.  By living
deliberately, eating consciously, and exercising regularly we can
experience greater levels of health and well-being.  By reducing
clutter, buying less, and rediscovering meaning we can infuse our
days with purpose and inspiration.  By setting limits, reworking
priorities, and making time we can reconnect with the people and
activities that feed us and contribute to thriving societies.  By
eating locally, traveling lightly, walking frequently, and building
modestly we can preserve the planet for future generations.
